Action Item Description
Manhattan’s reliance on visitors and sales taxes makes retail a key component of economic development. Focusing on strategies to improve the sale of goods and services, increase marketing for existing businesses, and encourage community members to spend locally will pay dividends back to the community. A retail strategy should look at how and where people purchase goods and services, identify market gaps, and develop tactics to recruit additional retailers from outside the region. Conducting a retail leakage analysis could reveal if there is a demand that is not being met locally.
